Optical Delusions

Just got back from the eye doctor.  She had warned me last time that there was fluid at the back of each retina.  She said that eventually they would tear and if I noticed flashing, or floaters, to let her know ASAP.  Well this past two weeks I have noticed some weirdness with my left eye, especially when I looked outside into the bright sunshine back into the darker inside.  I wasn’t sure, but there seemed to be some flashes.  There were other subtle distractions with my left eye too.  So, I decided to call for an appointment and go in.  It’s actually been a bit better the last few days and I almost canceled the appointment.

I was praying about it this morning and I felt like I was supposed to go, so go I went.  Good thing.  The doctor isn’t sure, but it looks like I have a very slight tear on my left eye retina.  She gave me a referral for a specialist and I’ll find out for sure next week and what can be done about it.

The good news is I’m not crazy, and God is faithful to answer prayer!  The other good news is she tested my eyes for 20/10. It’s confirmed!  20/10 in each eye independently even.  She seemed to think that was more impressive and I guess even more so at my age.

It’s a gift from God, so I can’t boast in myself.  He did it!  I get to be thankful :-)

Brood of Vipers!

052008 Snakes Near Oracle

A friend of mine e-mailed this to me this morning.  Apparently a den of diamondbacks near Oracle taken on May 20th of this year.  Reminds of  John the Baptist in Matthew 3:7:

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Looks like a REAL brood of vipers, although technically, I don’t think diamondbacks are vipers.

Did I spell that right?  No worries!

The bike ride was awesome this morning after a frustrating week.  I got called in the early early AM twice.  Tuesday and Thursday.  The second time to go in and work.  It really threw off my work out rhythm!  As a result, I only rode my bike twice this week  :-(

I was really looking forward to a hike this morning, but after sleeping in I didn’t think I’d have time.  I have an eye appointment at 11:00.  So, I rode the bike.  It was 91 degress when I left at 9:00.  After I carried my bike downstairs and hopped on, I was thinking.  “91 is pleasant.”  I must be used to the heat.

So up the hill I went.  It was the first time since I restarted my workout that I was able to climb the hill with no rest in the middle!  Normally I stop at a stop sign at the top of the steepest hill on the climb to catch my breath and have some water before I continue on.  This morning I huffed and puffed right through!

I didn’t stay long at the Pima Canyon Trailhead either.  A few drinks of water and bit of stretching and then it was back down the hill.  Yippeeeeeeee!

Then I noticed.  I had a bit of a head wind going down slowing me down.  that means my climb was a bit wind aided :-)  Still.  It’s progress.  I still want to loose like 30 pounds of fat and add half that back as muscle.  If I keep working, maybe someday it’ll be more than just a dream!

Monsoon ‘08 Begins

June 26, 2008 Monsoon Rain

AWESOME!  I finished with my haircut at SportsClips and saw how dark the sky was south, so I thought I’d go get a free car wash.  I was not disappointed!

Since I had been called in at Midnight because one of my employees was sick, I was off in the afternoon.  It was about 3:00 when I drove toward the storm.

I took Oracle and it was pretty light rain, but cool lightning ahead of me.  As I came down the hill toward River Road I noticed that the view of downtown was disappearing and the rain was picking up.  It was raining pretty good by the time I got to Prince.  I pressed southward and when I got to Grant it was a downpour!  My plan was to head over to First and back toward home.  As I turned East onto Grant I heard the hail ocassionally hitting the car.  The hail and rain were even more intense as I turned North onto 1st.  What FUN!  Visibility was low and folks were going slow.  I eventually drove back into light rain but the rain was pretty intense all the way to Wetmore.  The picture was taken a little after 3:00 around 1st and Prince.  I love the Monsoon!

Who do you believe?

Global Warming.  Crazy.  If you’ve read my thoughts here for any amount of time you know where I land on the issue.  I strongly believe it’s SOLAR warming.  That the Sun has been heating the planet and the little bit of warming we’ve had in the 80’s and 90’s was Sun driven.

Now there is a scientist who says nay sayers to Global Warming should be tried for lying to folk.  Read the story here.

He says oil CEO’s have been planting doubt on his precious theory and he thinks heads should roll.  In Congress too.  Silly Scientist!

What does he say about this story?    Particularly this part.

Geophysicist Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become an astronaut with NASA, said pictures from the US Solar and Heliospheric Observatory also show that there are currently no spots on the sun. He also noted that the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7C.

“This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930,” Dr Chapman noted in The Australian recently.

One good thing about high gas and oil prices is that the world is unlikely to tax energy even more on a theory that seems to be cooling off in popularity.

Prayer for Life

Jeremiah 9:23 & 24
Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches: 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.

Lord, help me to become this man.

Birth Pains

There’s a story on Yahoo! News put out by the Associated Press.  The story makes the assertion that the world seems to be spinning out of control.  Then it names a bunch of stuff that really aren’t out of control, but are reported on like they are!

For example it lists Midwest Levees failing.  Yes, it’s a big problem, but it has happened many times before and will again.  One reason why the water was at record levels is because more and more levees on the Mississippi prevent the water from going sideways, so the crest downstream is higher than ever before.  You don’t get that kind of perspective normally from the “responsible” media.  They’d rather make an even bigger deal out of it than it is.  Don’t get me wrong, the flooding was very widespread and costly.  I’m just saying it doesn’t fit under the realm of “spinning out of control.”

The next one made me laugh.  Polar Bears “adrift.”  THAT’S funny!  that State of Alaska is suing the Federal Government for putting the polar bear on the threatened species list.  The Polar Bear population is GROWING!  Environmentalists are stretching the truth.  That’s being kind.

Gas Prices are skyrocketing.  Yeah, that’s true.  It’s  mostly Washington D.C.’s fault along with the environmentalists that sue to keep production down.  Drill now!  Pay less!  Next.

Home values are low.  Yes.  Not a major problem for most who are staying right where they are.  For those with great credit it’s a great time to buy.  It’s a problem, but again, not as big as the press makes it out to be.

Air fares going up.  Same for college tuition and health care.  As fuel prices rise so will air fares.  Stinks, that’s true.  I know.  We can produce more oil and expand refinery capacity!  Oh yeah.  Environmentalists say we can’t.  Bummer.

College tuition.  Doesn’t Harvard have like a BILLION dollars in endowments?  Why don’t they lower tuition?  Seems like everyone could go for free!

Health care is a problem.  If we nationalize it, then it WILL spiral out of control!

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan going on “without end.”  Fight until you win, and we are winning!  Al Qaeda is nearly defeated in Iraq and now we are beefing up the fight in Afghanistan.  Not a good year to be a terrorist.

I’m more concerned about Iran.  If they get a nuke, it’s going to be big trouble.  If the United States, or Israel, is forced to bomb Iran to keep them from getting a nuke, it’s going to be big trouble.  Things may be spiraling out of control soon after all.

The article cites major disasters in the recent past.  The China Earthquake that killed tens of thousands, and sadly even more died in a Typhoon in Myanmar.  Hurricane Katrina (bad levy system in New Orleans and the Mayor didn’t use the evacuation plan.  Sad.), recent food shortages (cold spring and too much ethanol), etc.

Sounds like birth pains to me:

Matthew 24:7-9
7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

Which reminds me. Laws are being passed that are designed to keep people from hearing the truth about God’s Love through Jesus Christ. “Hate Speech” legislation is already in place in Europe and Canada making it illegal to say what God has to say about the homosexual lifestyle. The Alliance Defense Fund spends countless hours defending Christians, and first amendment rights, because unfortunately those things are being attacked.

Still, all these things must happen.

Matthew 24:6
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

So, is the world spinning out of control?  Not yet.  But even if it is, don’t worry.  God is in control!  Jesus said:

John 16:33b
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I’m banking on it!  I hope you are too.

Sad but True

Italy Flag

Italia no more in Euro Cup 2008.  Italy plays for penalty kicks and get just that.  Penalized.  Spain had the best of the play throughout the match with almost 2/3 of the possession.  Italy’s defense was awesome!   Italian goalie Buffon is amazing and had a couple of great saves. However, Italy got away with at least two penalties in the box, but the official was on the Italian side this match.  Perhaps he was making up for the first two Italian matches?  Italy’s defense held through extra time, but it was Spain’s night.  4-2 in penalty kicks.

Bummer, but the best team did win tonight.  Not sure who I want to win Euro 2008 now.  Spain probably.  Rumor has it that I has a “drop” of Spanish royal blood on my Mom’s side.

Since I’m 1/4 Sicilian, I probably have at least a drop of almost every kind of blood on the planet!

The Heat that is Hot

Hot Sun

I didn’t check the record for the date, but it’s one of the hottest days since I moved here 2 1/2 years ago.  It’s 1:27 in the afternoon and the thermometer says 113.6.  Ouch!

Update:  114.7 at 2:05 p.m.

Updated Update:  113.6 at 2:45 after topping out at 115.2.  Maybe we’ll go back up some, but there are a few clouds :-)

Update to the Updates:  It’s down to 110.5 at 4:25.  Not sure what it got up to officially or if it was a record.  I’ll check.  definitely the hottest day since I moved her!

Final? Update:  Just checked and it’s only hit 110 today at Tucson International.  It is cooler there sometimes for some reason.  Today’s record is 112, so it may be safe officially.

The Final Update:  National Weather Service says the high was 111 hit at 3:50 in the afternoon.  The record of 112 is safe.

I was thinking I should have gone outside when my thermometer read 115.  The hottest I’ve been out was 114 on the all-time record hot day in Roswell.  115 would have been a personal best :-)

On the Trail Again!

Look up!

The workout routine continues.  Very nice hike this morning to the “first saddle” on the Pusch Peak Trail.  1,000 feet vertical and maybe 3 miles round trip?  It is more intense overall then the bike ride since it’s more effort for a longer duration going up.  Really keeps the heart pounding for most of the hour and a half!.  Coming downhill you really use your quads and concentration.  On the bike you just coast down at 40 mph!  Yippeeeeeee!

It was hot early!  I left the apartment at 7:50 and it was already 84.  When I got home just barely after 9, it was 98!  It’s 107 right now and just 11:30 a.m.  Heat advisory today.  Be advised.  It’s Hot :-)

While I was hiking, the Lord was reminding me about keeping my eye on my walk.  How it’s so easy to get our eyes off the trail and end up on our rears!  We can all avoid many troubles in life if we’ll just stay close to the Lord and take careful steps on the trail of life.

God is good!  He longs to have that relationship with us.  He is passionate about it!  So much so He gave His life as payment for ours!  I think the reason God has told me not to ever forget how much He Loves me, is because when I do is when I get discouraged.  When I remember how much He is for me!  That He is passionate about guiding me, even transforming me into the likeness of Christ!, I get excited and the joy of the Lord becomes my strength!  Strength to stay close to His love, and His best, for His glory!
