New and Improved Blog!

WordPress Button

The content is the same, except I added a bio page.  Otherwise it’s just a face lift.

I decided on the change after helping a client install and customize WordPress on his site.  If I can help someone else, I decided I could work on mine too!  So, I browsed through some of the Word Press themes and settled on this one.  I liked the banner pictures at the top, but thought it would be even better to feature my own photography up there.  So, I switched theirs out and put mine in!

I really really like WordPress.  They really do make installing a blog easy.  I know just enough html and php to do some tweaks, and there you have it.  After helping my friend, and making a few bucks doing it, I’m thinking there might be more opportunities in using WordPress as a template for designing web sites for folk.  It could happen!  If you want to hire me, leave your contact info in the comments!

The Old Farmer’s Almanac – No Warming Here

Old Farmer’s Almanac

The 2009 Edition is out.  I had the fun task of interviewing one of the editors.  Turns out the Almanac’s famous weather prediction for this Winter is colder for much of the nation.  Indeed some of the country is expected to be MUCH colder!

In addition, in this edition, the meteorologist for the Almanac says that we (the whole planet) are in for a LONG TERM cooling period!  Why?  For the exact reasons I’ve been outlining here.  The Sun has already entered a less active period.  Solar scientists look at solar cycles and see the Sun being quiet for the next few decades.  Historically that has meant colder weather!

Another thing that was really cool (punny) about my interview with The Old Farmer’s Almanac, they are talking about ocean currents too.  Specifically, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation!  If you have been reading this blog (hi Mom) then you know I have been talking about the Pacific Decadal Oscillation for over a year now.  The Old Farmer’s Almanac says it has now flipped to a cold phase.  This will contribute to colder, and drier, conditions along the west coast and will contribute to colder temperatures in not just Alaska, but much of the country for the next few decades!

There is a similar current in the Atlantic.  I was not aware of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation, but apparently there is one.  It is currently (punny again!) in a warm phase.  It’s why Dr. Grey and others have been talking about a 30 year period of high hurricane activity.  I guess we are 10 years or so in.  What The Old Farmer’s Almanac and others are saying is once the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation flips to a cold phase, it’s going to get REALLY cold!  I’ve heard that one Russian scientist has a bet with a fellow scientist.  The Russian says it will be much colder in 2018 than some other previous year (I really should Google this).  The other scientist believes in Global warming, so he is expecting warmer.

A side note about the hurricanes.  The hurricane activity a few years ago turned out to be quieter than originally predicted.  The reason was El Nino.  The Atlantic was warm, but because of El Nino in the Pacific, the upper level winds tore tropical systems apart before they could really get going.  Now that we have the Pacific Decadal Oscillation flipping to a cold phase, say good bye to El Nino, for the most part.  With the Atlantic warm and the Pacific cold, hurricanes are going to be a big problem for the next ten years or more.  Look for global warming believers to try to say it’s because of global warming, even as the overall temperatures go down.

UPDATE:  The bet by the Russian scientist is that the temps from 2012 and 2017 will be colder then temps between 1998 and 2003.  Here’s a great article on why more scientists are bailing on the run away global warming.

Three in One

“God in three persons, Holy trinity.” so the song goes.  God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.  They appear together two times in the scriptures.  The first time in the first few verses of the whole Bible!  Here’s Genesis 1:1-3:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

In the beginning, God the Father!  And the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) was hovering over the waters. God said (Jesus is the spoken Word!) “Let there be light.”  That’s why John 1 says that nothing was made without Jesus:

1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.

We are made in God’s image.  God is three in one and so are we.  We are Spirit, Soul and Body.  When we accept the awesome gift of God’s love and sacrifice through what He did for us on the cross, His Spirit comes and lives in us.  His Spirit is sealed in ours!   2 Corinthians 1:21-22:

21 It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, 22 and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.

Other translations say we are sealed with His ownership!  Awesome.  In our Spirits we are saved!   In our hearts (mind, soul and emotions) we are being saved.   One way is to quit living the way we were living and put on the new nature!  Ephesians 4:22-24

22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Wow.  You mean we can be renewed while we are on this side of Heaven?!  Sounds tough, but really, the key is to just keep your eyes on Jesus.  2 Corinthians 3:18:

18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Our minds, thoughts, emotions are being saved.

For our bodies, however, there is no hope.  Romans 8:10-11 (emphasis mine)

10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

We are getting new and improved bodies.  Awesome!  1 Corinthians 15:41-43

41 The sun has one kind of glory, while the moon and stars each have another kind. And even the stars differ from each other in their glory.

42 It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. 43 Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength.

So, yeah.  You are saved, you are being saved and you will be saved!  God is faithful.  He will complete the work He has started in you!

A Proverbs 31 Woman

Palin & Hubby

I have a friend who was wondering why all of these Christians seemed to be excited about the Sarah Palin for Vice President pick. “After all, I thought evangelical types and the Bible, etc. are against having women in leadership. What gives?! Why are these same Christian types so excited about Palin for VP?,” she wondered. My friend is not a Christian, so I did my best to explain it to her.  Here is part of the e-mail I sent her way.  I also put this as an article on www.sarahpalinfacts.com

Dear Friend of mine,

The Bible has a lot to say about women and their role in the church and their role marriage. It also has something to say about business affairs too. I will try to explain.

Many women through the years have been offended by the often stated Christian view that a woman should submit to her husband. So much so that many women have decided to remove the word “obey” from their marriage vows. Indeed, the Bible does teach that a man is the head of the household. That a woman should submit to her husband. Basically, he gets the final say in affairs of the family. Let’s go through the whole section and I’ll show you what I mean. It’s an awesome chunk of God’s Word found in Ephesians 5. This is the NIV starting in verse 22:

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

It’s important to note that Paul (God through Paul) is not just talking about marriage. He is talking about the mystery of the church’s relationship to Christ! That mystery that is displayed and reflected in a marriage. That is why Satan hates marriage and why he is attacking it from every angle he can.

OK. Having said that, lets get to the submit and obey stuff. Verse 22. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. That’s pretty clear. No mincing of words :-) Verse 23 goes on: For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church… There it is. The man is to be the final authority in a marriage, but not the final authoritarian!

Verse 25: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… What woman doesn’t want that kind of sacrificial love?!

Finally in verse 33 women are instructed to respect their husbands. Not when he earns it! This is how God made us. Men need respect. Women need sacrificial love! Ephesians 5 is the formula to a successful marriage. When it’s done right, women don’t mind submitting to and respecting a husband that loves them as Christ loves His church.

So, what about women in authority, especially over men? Isn’t this wrong? I could go on and on (even more than I am) to hunt all of this down in the Bible. So. I will skip the Old Testament stuff about Deborah and Ruth and other awesome women of influence and I will get straight to what Paul instructed Timothy. This is the passage you are most likely thinking about. I Timothy 2:11-15:

11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Here we see Paul saying, I don’t allow women to teach men. It was Eve who was deceived. Women will be saved through childbearing, etc. Paul is talking about CHURCH. In Ephesians 5 Paul was talking about FAMILY STRUCTURE as a picture of God. If you strictly applied these passages to women everywhere in all circumstances, you could see where the overboard teaching of submissive, barefoot and pregnant would come from. But this is not the whole council of God.

Women are blessed as businesswomen even as they take care of their families! It’s all found in Proverbs 31. I have known many women who wanted to be Proverbs 31 women, and who indeed were! Here is a woman who has it all and can do it all:

Proverbs 31:10-31

10 A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.

11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.

12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.

13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.

14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.

15 She gets up while it is still dark;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her servant girls.

16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.

18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.

19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.

21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.

26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:

29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

31 Give her the reward she has earned,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

What man wouldn’t want one of those?! What country wouldn’t vote for one and prosper under the leadership of one?!!!

Bottom line the way I understand it. Women are instructed to be under the authority of men, particularly their husband when it comes to Family and Church. In business and politics, women can use the considerable gifts that God has given them to serve their families, country, business, whatever it is and to be successful and BLESSED to be a blessing!

That’s why when I see a strong women who has a strong faith in God that is demonstrated in her life, and in her service to her family and state and country, I get excited about her prospects to serve the country in a way that honor’s God and blesses us all!

I hope all that helps :>)

Your Friend,
Mike
